Courts Serving Denali Borough

Denali Borough is served by the Nenana Magistrate Court for local matters. The Nenana court handles District Court cases and some initial criminal proceedings for the borough. For Superior Court cases, including felonies and family law matters, proceedings may be heard at the Fairbanks Trial Court, which is the main Fourth Judicial District court.

The borough includes communities along the Parks Highway corridor such as Healy, the main gateway community to Denali National Park, as well as Clear and Cantwell. Court matters for residents of these communities route through the Nenana location or Fairbanks depending on the case type. Call the Nenana court to confirm which court handles your specific matter.

The Alaska Court System court directory lists current addresses, phone numbers, and hours for both the Nenana Magistrate Court and the Fairbanks Trial Court.

Copy Fees and Records Requests

The Alaska Court System applies the same fee schedule at all locations. Standard copies are $5 for the first page and $3 for each additional page in the same request. Certified copies are $10 for the first document plus $3 for each additional document certified. Research fees are $30 per hour when staff must search older or archived records. Audio recordings on CD are $20 per disc.

You can request records in person at the Nenana Magistrate Court or the Fairbanks Trial Court, by mail, or by fax. For Nenana records, mail to PO Box 449, Nenana, AK 99760. For Fairbanks records, mail to 101 Lacey St, Fairbanks, AK 99701. Include the case number or party names, the specific documents you need, and your contact details. Make checks payable to the Alaska Court System.

Some records are restricted under Alaska law. AS 40.25.120 limits access to certain prosecution records. Juvenile cases, sealed records, and some domestic matters may not be publicly available. The clerk will tell you if a restriction applies to your request.

Criminal Records and Background Checks

For statewide criminal history checks, contact the Alaska Department of Public Safety Criminal Records Bureau at 5700 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage, AK 99507, phone (907) 269-5767. Walk-in hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. A name-based check costs $20 and a fingerprint-based check costs $35. The DPS background check portal has forms and full instructions.

Law enforcement in Denali Borough is handled primarily by the Alaska State Troopers. The Healy trooper post serves much of the borough. Police reports and incident records are separate from court records; request them from the Alaska State Troopers directly, not from the court clerk.

AS 12.62.180 provides some protections for arrest records that did not lead to conviction. Dismissed cases, acquittals, and certain other non-conviction records may be eligible for restriction. Contact the Fairbanks District Attorney's office for specific guidance.
