Fairbanks Trial Court

The Fairbanks Trial Court at 101 Lacey Street is the main courthouse for Fairbanks North Star Borough and the Fourth Judicial District headquarters. This court handles Superior Court and District Court cases for the borough, including criminal matters, civil disputes, family law cases, small claims, probate, and juvenile matters. The Fourth Judicial District covers a vast area of Interior Alaska, but Fairbanks is the primary courthouse.

The Fairbanks courthouse also processes records requests for cases filed in the district. The clerk's office handles in-person, mail, email, and fax requests. Fairbanks is the largest city in Interior Alaska, and this court manages a significant volume of case filings each year. Both the Superior Court and District Court divisions operate from this building.

The Fairbanks court directory page at courts.alaska.gov lists all court divisions, current phone numbers, and staff contacts for the Fourth Judicial District Fairbanks location.

Copy Fees and Records Requests

The Alaska Court System uses the same fee schedule at all locations statewide. Standard copies cost $5 for the first page and $3 for each additional page in the same request. Certified copies are $10 for the first document plus $3 for each additional document certified. Research fees are $30 per hour when staff must search older or archived files. Audio recordings of court hearings on CD are $20 per disc.

You have several ways to request records. In person at 101 Lacey Street is the fastest option. Mail requests go to Fairbanks Trial Court, 101 Lacey St, Fairbanks, AK 99701. For faxed requests, use the district-specific version of form TF-311. Include the case number or party names, a description of what you need, your contact information, and payment. Make checks payable to the Alaska Court System.

Some records are restricted under Alaska law. AS 40.25.120 limits access to certain prosecution files. Sealed cases, juvenile records, and some domestic filings may not be publicly available. The clerk will tell you if a restriction applies to your request.

Criminal Records and Background Checks

For statewide criminal history checks, contact the Alaska Department of Public Safety Criminal Records Bureau, 5700 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage, AK 99507, phone (907) 269-5767. Walk-in hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. A name-based check costs $20 and a fingerprint-based check costs $35. The DPS background check portal has forms and instructions.

For law enforcement records in Fairbanks, the Fairbanks Police Department handles incidents within city limits. The Alaska State Troopers handle incidents outside the city. Both agencies handle records requests separately from the court clerk. Go to the appropriate law enforcement agency for incident reports and arrest records.

AS 12.62.180 provides some protection for arrest records that did not lead to conviction. Dismissed cases, acquittals, and certain non-prosecution outcomes may qualify for record restriction. Contact the Fairbanks District Attorney's office at (907) 452-1800 for specific guidance.

Note: Records removed under AS 22.35.030 cover acquittals and dismissals; marijuana possession cases under AS 22.35.040 for qualifying individuals became eligible for removal as of January 1, 2023.

Fairbanks Law Library

The Fairbanks Law Library at the Fairbanks Trial Court building is open to the public. It provides legal research tools, form assistance, and access to Alaska statutes and case law. Staff can help you locate forms and explain the records request process, though they cannot provide legal advice. The Alaska Court System law library locations page lists current hours and contact information for the Fairbanks location.

The Fairbanks law library is particularly useful for self-represented parties. It has the forms you need for civil filings, family law matters, small claims, and other case types. All official court forms are also available to download at courts.alaska.gov/forms.

eFiling in Fairbanks Courts

All attorneys practicing in Alaska courts must file documents electronically through TrueFiling. Access the portal at courts.alaska.gov/efile/index.htm.
